This month, I celebrate ten years since I began my weight-loss journey. Back in April 2007, I was disappointed in my body and the way I looked, and I resolved to find a way to change it. I’d been working out sporadically and inconsistently except for on Saturday mornings, and I resolved to try fitting in a morning workout every day. I started with 8-minute Tae-Bo workouts and went from there. I gradually worked in dietary changes and added longer, more intense workouts. Over a three-year period, I dropped around 40 pounds and for the most part have been able to maintain it. I’ve recently put on about five pounds, which I believe is due to my dietary changes to balance copper and zinc. Getting those balanced has forced changes in other areas, like my supplement regimen, and these drastic changes I
believe have had an impact on my weight. I’m hoping I can still maintain a decent weight for years to come by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Shortly after I started my blog, I posted about my weight loss, which I had accomplished before I went gluten-free. If your body tolerates wheat and gluten, then you do not need to go gluten-free to lose weight. Burning more calories than you consume is what will ultimately allow you to lose weight. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will give you the fuel you need to get through your workouts and help you to do all that you need to do throughout your day. Also, indulging occasionally in treats you love should not derail your efforts. It will keep you from feeling deprived.

I was just fine on my thyroid medication for many years. However, first going gluten-free and then modifying my diet to have a better copper-zinc balance have caused quite a few struggles. So many symptoms and changes have made it hard to determine whether or not I truly need my medication, and the fact that some people have been able to go off their medication by making these changes doesn’t make it any easier. Now, I think I’m finally getting the message that I’ll be on levothyroxine for life. As much as it would be wonderful to be one of those who can go off medication because his/her thyroid is perfectly healthy, I don’t believe it’s meant to be in my case. Till death do us part! A vitamin or mineral imbalance, such as a copper-zinc imbalance, can cause side effects that resemble malabsorption, a condition where damage to the gut prevents absorption of vitamins and minerals. In order to prevent copper toxicity from recurring, intake of copper and zinc need to be balanced once excess copper has been removed from the body. Making sure there is sufficient intake of zinc to balance out copper intake should prevent excess copper from building back up in the body and causing a return of symptoms. When I switched multivitamins back in December, it allowed me to uncover another significant and hidden health issue, copper toxicity. My multivitamin was not the cause of my iron deficiency, and it was not out-of-balance. My diet was. I was consuming many high-copper foods and in excessive quantities. Compounded medications are prepared by pharmacists specially trained and are usually prepared for patients who have allergies or who need a medication in a certain form factor (e.g., liquid vs. tablet) or with a certain formulation. I recently discovered that my problems with iron deficiency were due to the multivitamin I was taking. It contained minerals in amounts that were preventing my body from absorbing iron. Switching to another brand of multivitamin has helped me greatly. Christmas luncheons and similar events at the workplace can lead someone with celiac disease, food allergies, or other food issues to feel less than festive. It can be difficult to figure out how to handle dealing with the food. Sometimes it may not even be possible to participate. Even then, things don’t have to turn into “bah humbug” experiences.
