I’ve been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Below, I share my experience getting vaccinated and how things went afterwards.
I had fully intended to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as a vaccine was available and when I was eligible. However, I began to have doubts when I began to read about and hear things concerning uncertainties about the vaccine and about people getting really sick or even dying after being vaccinated. I did do other research that put many of those doubts to rest, but I still felt unsure. I was thankful that I was not immediately eligible to receive the vaccine as that gave me an excuse to wait and see how others around me handled it before I got it myself. Both my parents got vaccinated and did fine. Others I knew also had no problems with the vaccination. When my clinic finally sent me a message saying I was eligible to make an appointment to be vaccinated, I decided to go ahead and make the appointment.
When I got to the clinic, I went through the usual process of getting signed in and making sure paperwork was done. I then went into a room that had a lot of stations set up in it. I went into one of those, where a nurse gave me the first shot. After that, she asked me to set a timer on my smartphone for fifteen minutes and to have a seat while I waited. During that time, someone helped me set up the appointment for my second dose. The timer on my phone ran out without me having any side effects, so I went home. The first dose was pretty uneventful except my arm was extremely sore from the shot. If I had any other symptoms, they were minimal. I was more worried about the second dose. That was the one that was supposed to bring on more symptoms and maybe even illness. I nervously anticipated the appointment for my second dose, which was exactly three weeks after my first one.
The second shot went pretty much like the first one. I checked in at the clinic, went into a station in the same large room, and got the second dose. Like the first one, my arm was extremely sore. I was thankful that the second shot was done in the opposite arm. I felt fine that first night, although I had a hard time falling asleep. However, I was up late working on a household project, so that may have also had something to do with my difficulty falling asleep. I was fine the next day until the evening, when I started having chills. Later in the evening, I felt feverish. I decided to give my supervisor a heads-up in case I would be too ill in the morning to work. However, I was feeling much better the next day. I worked the next day and continued to feel better throughout the day. I never noticed any other negative effects after that, although my arm was still sore. It was a few more days before that soreness went away completely.
I’m thankful that I’m now fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and that my vaccination experience went smoothly. I’m glad that I didn’t experience major negative effects from the doses and hope I won’t experience any long-term effects in the future.
