I just had my ferritin checked on December 30th, and it was in the normal range!
I asked my doctor to order CBC and iron tests at my last appointment. I mentioned ferritin specifically, but for some reason she didn’t order it. After getting back those test results, which were all normal, I decided to order ferritin on my own. I got the results from my ferritin test the next day, and the result was just inside the normal range! I was thrilled! The calcium + vitamin D supplement was definitely the cause of my worsening iron and ferritin levels back in the summer. I’m glad that stopping it was the only change I had to make to get things right.
Sometimes iron deficiency isn’t caused by an inadequate intake of iron, and iron supplements won’t fix the problem. They are not always the answer. Sometimes it’s prudent to find out if other nutrient deficiencies or imbalances may be causing the iron deficiency. Sometimes just correcting the issues with those nutrients will fix the iron deficiency.
