A few months ago, I tried something with flaxseed and did not have any reaction to it. It’s been wonderful to strike another ingredient from my “to-avoid” list!
The grocery store where I shop has some gluten-free bread loaves, the Schär Artisan Baker loaves, that don’t contain xanthan gum. Even though Bob’s Red Mill has stopped using wheat to make its xanthan gum, I prefer to remain cautious when it comes to this ingredient, especially for food items I buy to keep in stock at my house, like loaves of bread. I would buy the white bread because it also didn’t contain flaxseed. The other varieties included flaxseed as an ingredient. There were times, though, when I’d walk by the shelf with the bread, the white bread would either be completely out, or there would only be one package on the shelf. I decided that with the supply chain issues, it might be a good idea to try something with flaxseed so I could buy any of the Schär Artisan Baker loaves if I don’t react to it.
I wasn’t completely sure what I could try to test whether or not I still reacted to flaxseed. I definitely didn’t want to buy one of the bread loaves or a package with multiple servings of a food item in case I did have a reaction and would have to find a way to get rid of the rest of it. I decided to go to the section of the store where I could just get a single snack bar rather than buying a box of them. I was able to find one that had flaxseed as an ingredient. It was a close-out item on sale, so I bought two of them. They weren’t very good, but I was able to eat both without any reaction!
Since trying those snack bars, I’ve bought all the varieties of the gluten-free bread and have found them all to be pretty good. I don’t think I’ve gone by the shelf and saw that there were none at all. However, when I notice the stock getting low, I’ll buy a loaf to have on hand. I’m thankful to be able to buy any of the varieties when I need another loaf of bread. I’m thankful that the flaxseed reaction I had over ten years ago ended up being a temporary one and that making that discovery has allowed me to branch out and try more types of gluten-free bread loaves as well as other items like many of the Enjoy Life snacks.
I’m so thankful I no longer react to flaxseed and am glad that being able to reintroduce it has allowed me to continue to find loaves of gluten-free bread on the shelf when I need them. I’ve also been able to branch out and try other snack items that I had avoided before. I’m always happy to find out there are more things I can eat!
