Weight Loss Journey: Fifteen Years Later

It’s been fifteen years since I began to take steps to lose some weight. Thankfully things are still going pretty well on this front, and I hope can continue to do what I can to stay at a healthy weight.

In April 2007, I began taking steps to get my body to a healthy weight. I lost about forty pounds over two to three years. About five years ago, I gained back about ten pounds due to dietary and supplement changes I needed to make so I could get enough of certain vitamins and minerals and get them in the right balance. For the next five years, I was able to maintain my weight at this level, although I’ve had some challenges.

One, I began perimenopause. In 2019, I noticed changes that led me to believe I was perimenopausal. Around that time as well, I started to have more acne breakouts and began to gain some weight. Since I monitored my weight on a daily basis, I was able to take steps to prevent continued weight gain. I stopped a lot of the extra things I was eating and was able to keep from gaining more weight. Also, the supplements I began taking to deal with the perimenopausal symptoms helped to keep me from gaining weight. To this point, I’ve been able to keep my weight pretty steady with these changes.

Two, I developed symptoms due to inner ear damage. The doctors just can’t bring themselves to agree, but I believe my results point to bilateral vestibular hypofunction, which can take its toll with all the activities that trigger my damaged vestibular system. At the end of some days, I can feel really worn out and will not feel like doing much of anything physically active. I’m so thankful that when I started my weight loss journey, I decided to schedule my workouts in the mornings. Not only is that a good time to work out because nothing else is going on, it’s also the time of the day I feel the most physically fresh. If I had to schedule my workouts in the evening, I’d have a much harder time sticking to them because everything else throughout the day would have worn me out by that time.

I’m so thankful that, in spite of the new challenges that have emerged in the last five years, I’ve been able to continue maintaining a healthy weight. I’m hoping that I can continue to do so in spite of any additional challenges that may arise in the future.

I've been struggling with the gluten-free life since September 11, 2012. While I've dealt with many inconveniences and difficulties on the journey, I do feel that my health is slowly but surely improving. I'm a Christian who loves being involved in her church. I love spending time with my family and friends. I love science fiction and fantasy television shows and movies. I love to read. I love my job as a programmer/analyst. I love grocery shopping and shopping for electronics and books.
