Milkshake-As-A-Meal

Jump to recipe

I hadn’t had a milkshake in years.  I would see family and friends getting milkshakes with their meals at fast food restaurants and feel a longing.  I was concerned about ordering milkshakes at fast food and other restaurants due to potential allergenic ingredients and cross-contamination.  Another concern was calories.  Even the smaller sizes could contain a meal’s worth of calories.  About the only way I could see myself enjoying a milkshake is if I made it myself and had one as a meal.

As I was driving to work one morning, I started thinking about milkshakes again.  A thought occurred to me.  If I could really only enjoy a homemade one as a meal, perhaps I could make a milkshake with a nutrition shake rather than plain milk.  The nutrition shake would have added vitamins and minerals that the milk wouldn’t have.  It seemed like a great idea, but I wondered how filling a milkshake alone would be.  The only way I would know for sure would be to try it.

For dinner one evening, I decided to make a milkshake with a dark chocolate Ensure Plus shake, ice cream, and some frozen berries.

I combined the ingredients in my blender and ran the blender for a few seconds.  I poured the mixture into a glass and drank it.  It turned out really well!  It also seemed to keep me satisfied.  A couple of days later, I decided to try another recipe for breakfast.  I decided to use a vanilla Boost shake, the ice cream, four tablespoons of PB2 powder, and a banana.

The mixture was not as thick as the previous one, but it was still really good!

I was curious to see if others had thought about trying the same thing that I did, using nutrition shakes to make a milkshake.  It turns out that my idea isn’t original.  Great minds think alike, I guess!

I’m excited that I can enjoy an occasional milkshake without consuming way too many extra calories and without having to worry about exposure to allergenic ingredients and cross-contamination.  I hope others can also enjoy this option!
